The ‘Southern Cross’ Project

A recent group project involved the ‘Southern Cross’, a Fokker F.VII monoplane, in which Sir Charles Kingsford Smith made the first flight across the Pacific - from the USA to Australia. He and his crew made the flight in May, 1928. Incidentally, in September of the same year, he flew this aircraft to New Zealand and back again.

The top picture, below, is that of the group (with their leaders) at the front gate of the restoration hangar. They are proudly displaying a model of the Fokker monoplane. The ‘Southern Cross’ is pictured next. The photo was taken in 1943; eight years after Kingsford Smith died. The bottom photo is of Kingsford Smith shortly before one of his many flights.
